The second day of your trek begins with a hearty breakfast to fuel the day’s adventure. Today, you’ll journey through some of the most striking and varied landscapes Iceland has to offer.

Our first major highlight is the Hrafntinnusker obsidian desert, a stark black expanse that contrasts beautifully with the vibrant Reykjafjöll rhyolite mountains. Next, we’ll traverse the colorful Jökultungur area, where geothermal activity has sculpted gullies in shades of burnt orange, vivid yellow, and red, contrasting dramatically with the pale sandy peaks surrounding them.

At the top of Jökultungur, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views over the Fjallabak area and Álftavatn Lake, our destination for the evening. To reach the campsite, we’ll wade across a river—an exhilarating experience for those new to river crossings!

Day 3: Álftavatn to Emstrur – Into Volcano Country

After a restful night and a nourishing breakfast, we set off on the next leg of our adventure, traversing through Iceland’s dramatic volcanic landscapes.

The day begins with another river crossing before we venture onto the Mælifellssandur black sand desert, an otherworldly expanse leading us into the heart of volcano country. Along the way, we pass the towering Stórasúla and Hattafell volcanoes, iconic features of this rugged terrain.

If the skies are clear, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of two legendary glacier volcanoes, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. Eyjafjallajökull gained worldwide fame for its 2010 eruption that disrupted global air traffic, while Mýrdalsjökull conceals the powerful Katla volcano, a force of nature shrouded in ice.

Continuing to Botnar, a green oasis surrounded by black desert sands, we’ll stop to marvel at the Markarfljótsgljúfur canyon, a jaw-dropping 200-meter-deep gorge carved by a glacial river. Our campsite for the night is set in this remarkable area, offering incredible views of the stark and beautiful surroundings.

Along the way, we’ll continue to enjoy stunning glacier views as the scenery begins to shift. Sparse trees begin to dot the landscape, eventually giving way to the dense birch forest that defines Þórsmörk, a green oasis nestled in the Icelandic highlands.

Upon reaching Þórsmörk, you can celebrate your incredible achievement: completing the legendary Laugavegur Trail! Take time to soak in the serene beauty of this valley, which lies under the shadow of the majestic Eyjafjallajökull glacier.
