Trip Itinerary

Day 1- Meet at Finse & Hike

This first afternoon we will meet at about 1:30 pm at Finse, the highest-altitude station on the Bergen Railway, which is the railway line between Oslo and Bergen. Easily accessible from both cities with several daily departures, Oslo is about a 5 hour ride, and it is about 2.5 hours from Bergen.

After check in at our hotel which is nearby the train station, we will enjoy our first hike of the trip to Jomfrunuten. This will give the group a chance to get to know each other, become acquainted with the Norwegian landscape, and to warm up our gear and test our hiking boots. Tonight, we will enjoy a welcome dinner, and discuss what lies ahead!(D)

Day 2- Glacier Hike Hardangerjokulen

This morning, after a delicious breakfast, we will begin our hike to Hardangerjøkulen, one of Norway's biggest glaciers.

The hike is about two-hours on a small, but well maintained trail each way, and offers panoramic views that surround us. Along the way we will be captivated by what we are seeing, and even cross a few glacial streams. One of the benefits of traveling with us is the company of our highly skilled guides, that will assist us in equipping ourselves with crampons, helmets, harnesses, ice axes and rope, to ensure the safety of our glacier hiking when needed. Together we will explore this spectacular landscape of snow and ice, and discover both deep crevasses and interesting historical treats. Our guides are highly skilled, and have experience in mountain terrain all over the world; they stand ready to teach participants how to conduct themselves safely on the magical blue ice. In the evening, we will have a three-course dinner at our accommodation.(B,L,D)

Day 3-Cycling the Navvies' Road

Built about 100 years ago along with the Bergen railway, the Navvies' Road is one of Norway's most famous and popular cycling routes. There is no traffic, and a wonderful mix of gravel, dirt single track and paved road. There is truly something for every type of rider on this spectacular trail.

As we ride, we pass the Hardangerjøkulen glacier and marvel at the changing landscape as we pass mountain lakes, majestic waterfalls and continue down a descent of 1,700 m to Flam, at the head of an arm of Sognefjorden.  As we descend, we will find a nice spot to enjoy our packed lunch, have a rest, and snap some pictures for the photographers in the group. The last part of the tour is along the famous Flam Railway, considered to be one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world. Upon arrival in Flam, we will drop off our bikes, and do a short transfer to the lovely town of Aurland. Here we will stay in a rustic guesthouse by the fjord and enjoy our dinner in a social atmosphere.

In some cases, we will have too much snow at the start of our biking tour. In this case, we take the train in the first section, then bike the last section from Hallingskeid to Flam.(B,L,D)

Day 4-5- Norwegian Fjord Kayaking

Days 4 and 5 will consist of an over-night kayaking adventure in the incredible and narrow Nærøyfjord!

We will spend our days exploring this dynamic and scenic fjord, typically in stable double kayaks. The two-day adventure tour takes us from Flam out to the Aurlandsfjord, and the full length of the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord. As we glide through this undeniably magical landscape we take in the sights and sounds, not least of which are multiple towering waterfalls, seals, eagles, otters and if we are lucky, porpoise!

Our paddle will also bring us to the small village of Undredal, where the goats outnumber the people 500 to 70! Known for its production of goats cheese, we will sample some Norwegian cheese time permitting.

Tonight we sleep under the stars of Norway, and we provide all of the gear and equipment you need for a warm, cozy night in your tent! If you choose to leave your sleeping bag at home, you are free to rent yours.

On day 5 we will head back to Aurland after morning kayaking, and have our farewell dinner together.(B,L,D)

Day 6-Mountain Prest Hike & Farewell!

Today we gain a different perspective of Aurlandsfjord...from above!

After breakfast we make our way up the mountainside by car, towards our hiking goal for the day, the mountain Prest (1363 meters above sea level). Although a challenging day hike, the reward you gain at its end is well worth the trip! The view is nothing short of spectacular, and weather permitting, the view we take in will include the summits of nearby mountains, surrounding glaciers, and overall majestic beauty of the Fjord.

After the hike, we will sadly go our separate ways. The trip ends in time for the last connection from Flam Railway to Oslo, Bergen and Voss. Flam Railway is one of Europes most famous railway lines, and is an adventure in itself. It is also possible to travel to Bergen by boat.(B,L)
