Hiking Lofoten: The Land of the Midnight Sun - 8 Days

Join the adventure through Lofoten, as we head for some of the greatest hiking destinations in this world-famous group of islands

Embark on an eight-day exploration of arguably Norway's most captivating archipelago, where we have carefully curated the finest hikes, iconic viewpoints, and hidden gems. Lofoten's landscape is a symphony of dramatic mountains, expansive white beaches, tumultuous seas, and thriving wildlife, providing unparalleled experiences of Norwegian nature at its zenith.

In Lofoten, the midnight sun graces the skies from late May to the end of July, creating a spectacle as the warm sun hovers perpetually above the horizon. Come August, the sun sets around 10:30 pm, casting a lingering light throughout the day. By September, the tableau shifts, offering glimpses of the enchanting Northern Lights. Lofoten's distinctive seasonal variations make it an extraordinary destination.

Beyond its celestial phenomena, Lofoten boasts a natural allure that captivates even the most seasoned globetrotter. Towering mountains, narrow straits, charming fishing villages, and a profound historical legacy compose just a few of the many highlights awaiting exploration.

Our journey commences in Bodø, easily accessible by direct flights from both Oslo and Bergen. The first night is spent here before a morning ferry ride (or a plane in the last summer departure) to Moskenes. Our week in Lofoten is flexible, with day trips tailored to weather conditions, allowing for potential adjustments to the itinerary while striving to fulfill the goals outlined in the day-to-day program.

As the week draws to a close, the expedition concludes at Evenes Airport, offering a direct flight back to Oslo. Alternatively, if you prefer to conclude the tour in Svolvær, the choice is yours. Experience the magic of Lofoten, where every day unfolds new wonders against the backdrop of this extraordinary archipelago.

Highlights:

  • Embark on hikes to four of Lofoten's most iconic peaks.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1- Arrival in Bodø

Tonight is for arrivals, and we will enjoy a trip briefing and welcome dinner at 7 pm this evening. (D)

Day 2- Å- Welcome to Trekking Paradise

This morning after packing up our breakfast to go, we will get ready to take our ferry from from Bodø to Lofoten, departing at around 6:00 am.

The westernmost fishing village in Lofoten, Å offers some of the most stunning  surroundings in the world! Here we also have the chance to visit Lofoten Stockfish museum, and the Fishing Village museum . Lofoten is famous for stockfish, and all around the islands, you will see huge racks with drying fish. After introducing ourselves to the village with a leisurely walk, we take a short drive and aim our hiking boots towards the mountain Tindstind (468 meters above sea level). The hike takes 4-5 hours, ending at one of the most spectacular viewpoints in Norway.  After the hike, we will enjoy dinner, before enjoying a much deserved night of quiet rest at our cozy accommodations.(B,L,D)

Day 3- Beaches, Boats & Spectacular Fjord Lanscapes

This morning will see the group boarding a local ferry in the incredibly beautiful Kjerkfjord, and then walking across to Bunesstranda. An iconic location in Norway, the beach of Bunesstranda is truly a sight to behold. Kjerkfjors is wonderfully lined with impressive jagged mountains, and it is here that will hike for about three hours. As the sun sets, we will head back to Reine by boat. The group will be treated to a traditional fisherman hut dinner, and this authentic accommodation is where we will lay our heads tonight.(B,L,D)

Day 4- Visit Lofoten's Most Beautiful Beach

Today is for further exploration of our surroundings in Lofoten.

We cross the island Flakstad, and go on to Moskenes Island and to Fredvang (45 minutes’ drive). This day’s destination is the beautiful beach at Kvalvika, and the mountain of Ryten (543 meters, 5 hours). We can guarantee that the beauty of this beach will leave you in awe, even if the water is ice cold! Green plains and steep mountains surround the idyllic beach, and the view from the mountain's peak is remarkable. We continue to Ballstad, and stay in our fisherman accommodation close to the sea. Ballstad is another beautiful, authentic fishing village, that you will be sure to take home in memory, and in photos.(B,L,D)

Day 5- Hiking on the west coast of Lofoten

Today we will start our journey to one of two incredible beaches,  Utakleiv or Haukland, and begin our trek to the top of  Himmeltinden , the highest summit in this part of Lofoten. The trek takes around five hours, and in good weather the views out to sea and across the far side of Lofoten are fantastic. As the night before, we spend the night in Ballstad. (B,L,D)

Day 6- A coastal walk between Eggum and Unstad

Today we will start our travels east, with a 45 minute drive from Ballstad to Unstad.

Weather permitting, we will spend some time at the beach, enjoying coffee and taking in the sights that surround us before we begin our coastal walk between Unstad and Eggum. Considered one of the most beautiful walks in Lofoten, the hike between Unstad and Eggum features world class surf breaks, and in Eggum you will see an extremely famous sculpture in Artscape Nordland. This art project has spread art and inspiration all around the world, highlighting the beautiful nature of Northern Norway.

Upon our arrival, we will take a drive (around 1 hour) to our accommodation in  Svolvær. Svolvaer is the first town to be formed in North Norway, established as early as the year 800 AD. The business center of Lofoten, Svolvær is also an important fishing village. Our accommodation for the next two nights is on the site of Svolvaer’s first settlements, and the restaurant is in the house where the first general store in Svolvaer stood, constructed in 1828. (B,L,D)

Day 7- Lofoten's Iconic and most beautiful fishing villiage

Today begins with a 30 minute drive to the working fishing village of  Henningsvær.

Henningsvær is a small group of islands situated between the impressive Mount Vågakallen and the "Lofoten Wall". The sea otherwise surrounds Henningsvær. A natural hub of activity during the Lofoten Winter Fishery, the 1800's were witness to a thriving and prosperous villiage. Unlike many smaller villages in Lofoten that fluctuate with regards to population,  Henningsvær remains stable at about 500 residents.

The islands were not connected to the rest of Lofoten by bridges until 1981, which likely spared the community from architecture instituted around Lofoten in the 1960's and 70's. Such a combination of an active, vibrant environment and well-preserved architecture makes Henningsvær something unique. We spend the morning enjoying some free time to enjoy this atmospheric fishing village and its beautiful harbor. In the afternoon we will enjoy a walk to the top of Festvågtinden. From the top, we can enjoy panoramic views sweeping across Henningsvær, to the Vestfjord and the Steigen area on the other side of the fjord. We spend the night in a traditional rorbu in Svolvær, as the day previous. Since this evening is the last night of the trip, we will have a nice farewell dinner together!(B,L,D)

Day 8- Farewell!

After breakfast, our trip has come to an end!

There will be a private transport to Evenes/Narvik airport to meet a flight at 3:30 pm, and we will leave Svolvær at around 10:30 am. If you like, you can also stay in Henningsvær or get off the transport at Svolvær airport and fly directly from Svolvær. Getting from Svolvær with flights to Oslo is easy, but a bit more expens ive than Evenes/Narvik. It is also possible to take the afternoon express boat from Svolvær back to Bodø. (B)
