Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Puerto Natales – Las Torres Base Lookout Point

After an early breakfast at your hotel, head to the bus terminal to catch the 7:00 am bus to Torres del Paine National Park (we recommend arriving at least 10 minutes before departure). The scenic journey takes you through stunning Patagonian landscapes, eventually arriving at the Laguna Amarga entrance, where you'll register with the park authorities (CONAF). From here, you'll board a shuttle operated by Transporte Las Torres, which will take you to the park's Welcome Center.

Once at the Welcome Center, check in at the Cerro Paine Reserve, and after a brief 5-minute walk, you’ll reach Torre Central. This is where you will check into your accommodations—whether staying at the mountain refuge or setting up camp—before embarking on your adventure.

Today's trek takes you through the stunning Ascencio Valley. You’ll hike through dense forests and ascend into a rocky moraine, where you’ll tackle a challenging but rewarding climb. The final ascent leads you to one of the most iconic viewpoints in the world: the Base of the Torres. Perched at 900 meters above sea level, you'll be greeted by the sight of the three towering granite spires—North, Central, and South—rising dramatically above a turquoise glacial lake. Pause here to capture breathtaking photos and savor your boxed lunch while soaking in the magnificent surroundings.

After taking in the beauty of this awe-inspiring landscape, you'll retrace your steps back to Torre Central. After a rewarding day on the trail, relax and enjoy a well-deserved dinner at the refuge.

  • Hiking Time: 8–10 hours
  • Distance: 21 km (13.5 miles)
  • Elevation Gain:  3,517 ft (1,072m)

Day 2 - Hike Francés Sector

Wake up and enjoy breakfast surrounded by the rugged beauty of Torres del Paine as you prepare for a more relaxed yet stunningly scenic day of trekking. Today’s route is the least demanding in terms of elevation gain, allowing you to fully take in the incredible surroundings at a more leisurely pace.

You’ll follow a well-maintained trail along the shores of Lake Nordenskjöld, its deep blue waters a constant companion as you walk. Along the way, you’ll cross a small river and stroll along serene beaches nestled beside the lake, making this a day to truly savor the landscape.

Scenic Backdrop: Almirante Nieto & Cuernos del Paine

For most of the trek, you’ll be treated to awe-inspiring views of the majestic Cerro Almirante Nieto and the iconic Cuernos del Paine, two of Patagonia’s most celebrated natural landmarks. Their towering peaks and dramatic forms serve as the perfect backdrop for your hike, offering countless opportunities for unforgettable photos.

Trekking Options and Lodging: Francés or Cuernos Sector

Today’s trek spans between 4.5 and 6.5 hours, depending on whether you’re staying at the Cuernos Sector (13.2 km) or pushing on to the Francés Sector (17 km). Both options offer cozy accommodations, with each sector boasting smaller and more intimate lodges and campsites.

  • Cuernos Sector: Known for its warm, welcoming atmosphere, this is a favorite among trekkers seeking comfort and camaraderie after a day on the trail.
  • Francés Sector: For those looking to get a head start on the next day’s hike, staying here will shorten the following day's route, making it a strategic choice for some.

Take your time today to enjoy the scenery—you’ll be walking amidst some of the most striking landscapes Patagonia has to offer. Whether you choose the Cuernos or Francés Sector for your overnight stay, you’re in for a cozy, comfortable evening surrounded by natural beauty.

Note: If you stayed in the Chileno Sector on Day 1, your route today will be approximately 5 km (3 mi) longer.

  • Distance: 13.2 km (8 mi) to Cuernos Sector / 17 km (10.5 mi) to Francés Sector

Day 3 - Trekking Francés Valley

Today is one of the most demanding days of the W Trek due to the significant elevation gain required to reach the stunning French and British viewpoints. The trek takes you through some of the most iconic landscapes in Torres del Paine, offering jaw-dropping views of hanging glaciers and jagged peaks.

Starting from the Cuernos Sector, the first 4 km (2.5 mi) is a relatively flat stretch until you reach the Francés Sector. From there, you’ll hike another 1.4 km (almost a mile) to a junction where the trail splits: one route heads to Paine Grande, and the other ascends to the French and British viewpoints.

Opt for the trail leading to the viewpoints, trekking 1 km (0.5 mi) to reach "Campamento Italiano," a CONAF-operated camp where many hikers leave their heavy packs. Here, you can lighten your load by storing your gear and continuing with just a daypack containing water, snacks, and warm layers.

French Lookout

The ascent to the French Lookout begins with a 2.5 km (1.5 mi) climb, gaining 300 meters (984 ft) in elevation. This viewpoint offers breathtaking views of hanging glaciers and the surrounding peaks, making it an ideal spot to rest and take photos.

British Lookout

For an additional challenge, continue another 4 km (2.5 mi) to the British Lookout, with an additional elevation gain of 280 meters (918 ft). At the top, you'll find a rocky area perfect for taking the best panoramic shots of the surrounding landscape, including the towering peaks of Cerro Fortaleza and Cerro Catedral.

Return to Camp

After taking in the awe-inspiring views, retrace your steps to Campamento Italiano to pick up your backpack. From there, descend along the same trail back to your lodging for the night at Francés.

Hiking Stats:

  • Distance: 18 km (11 mi) from Cuernos Sector / 15 km (9.32 mi) from Francés Sector
  • Hiking Time: 9 hours from Cuernos Sector / 8 hours from Francés Sector
  • Elevation Gain: 980 m (3,215 ft) from Cuernos / 800 m (2,624 ft) from Francés
  • Difficulty: Medium-High
  • Lodging: Francés Sector

Highlights: French and British Lookouts, Skottsberg Lake, Cerro Fortaleza, Cerro Catedral

Day 4- Hike Grey Glacier Sector - Pehoé Lake Navigation - Return to Puerto Natales

On your final day in Torres del Paine, prepare for a long but rewarding trek through the breathtaking landscapes of the Paine Grande sector. This 8.6 mi (14 km) route includes fascinating features like wooden barriers along sections of the trail, which promote regrowth in areas impacted by past fires. Along the way, you’ll cross a suspension bridge—a thrilling "Indiana Jones-style" crossing with views of the river, Lake Grey, and Cerro Paine Grande, perfect for memorable photos.

Highlights: Grey Glacier and Lake Grey Viewpoints

From the Francés Sector, the trek covers 31.5 km (19.5 mi) with a 270 m (885 ft) elevation gain, or 34.5 km (21.5 mi) with a 450 m (1,476 ft) elevation gain from the Cuernos Sector. This demanding hike rewards you with spectacular sights, especially as you reach the initial viewpoint overlooking Lake Grey. Here, you’ll witness the vast expanse of Grey Glacier, with its ice floes drifting across the lake—a humbling and awe-inspiring experience.

Only a few manage to reach this first viewpoint due to the trek’s length, making it an accomplishment worth savoring.

Return to Paine Grande, Catamaran to Pudeto, and Transfer to Puerto Natales

After soaking in the glacier views, retrace your steps back to Paine Grande. Here, make sure to reach the pier at least 20 minutes before the catamaran departs for Pudeto. Enjoy the scenic 35-minute ride across Lake Pehoé, taking in your final views of the park. Once at Pudeto, board the bus for your return to Puerto Natales, where you’ll arrive around 9:30 PM. We recommend planning an overnight stay in Puerto Natales.
