Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Quito to the Route of the Waterfalls

Your adventure begins with a morning pickup in Quito and a scenic drive into Ecuador's famous Avenue of the Volcanoes. The trek starts on the slopes of Pasochoa Volcano, providing an ideal first day for acclimatization as you adjust to the altitude.

Following the Pita River, you'll hike through a landscape of waterfalls, volcanic canyons, and rolling Andean grasslands. Along the way, your guide will introduce the unique flora, fauna, and ecosystems that make this region so special. On clear days, you'll enjoy views of surrounding volcanoes including Antisana and Cayambe.

After a rewarding day on the trail, arrive at Cotopaxipungo Hotel and settle into your first night in the Andes.

Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Overnight: Cotopaxipungo Hotel
Meals: Packed lunch

Day 2: Cotopaxipungo to Hacienda El Porvenir

After breakfast, set out across a diverse network of trails connecting remote valleys, native forests, and traditional Chagra lands. The Chagras are Ecuador's legendary highland cowboys, and their culture remains deeply connected to the rugged landscapes surrounding Cotopaxi.

The route follows old roads and footpaths used for generations, passing through small rural communities where daily life continues much as it has for centuries. Throughout the day you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the relationship between the local people and the dramatic environment they call home.

One of today's highlights is Manto Blanco Waterfall, a beautiful cascade hidden among the Andean foothills. After stopping to enjoy the scenery and a picnic lunch, continue through rolling terrain toward Hacienda El Porvenir.

Nestled beneath the towering slopes of Rumiñahui Volcano, the hacienda offers one of the most authentic mountain lodge experiences in Ecuador. This evening, learn more about the region's geology, wildlife, and cultural heritage while enjoying a hearty dinner.

Hiking time: Approx. 6 hours
Overnight: Hacienda El Porvenir
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch

Day 3: Hacienda El Porvenir to Tambopaxi

Today you enter some of the most iconic landscapes of the Cotopaxi region. Leaving the hacienda behind, you'll climb through native Andean forests before emerging into the wide-open páramo that surrounds Cotopaxi National Park.

As you gain elevation, the views become increasingly dramatic. The trail leads to the Mirador de Los Guardianes del Volcán, a viewpoint featuring striking wooden sculptures inspired by Andean mythology and the powerful volcanoes that define the region.

From this vantage point, enjoy panoramic views across a landscape of volcanic peaks, windswept grasslands, and glacial valleys. Keep an eye out for wild horses, Andean foxes, and soaring birds of prey that inhabit the park.

The afternoon brings a gradual descent toward Tambopaxi Lodge, one of Ecuador's most spectacular mountain lodges. Located directly beneath Cotopaxi Volcano, the lodge offers front-row views of one of the world's highest active volcanoes.

Hiking time: Approx. 7 hours
Overnight: Tambopaxi Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch

Day 4: Tambopaxi to Hacienda El Tambo

Wake up to unforgettable views of Cotopaxi before beginning what many consider the most rewarding day of the entire trek.

Today's route traverses remote valleys and high-altitude ridgelines on the eastern side of the Andes. Far from roads and crowds, you'll experience some of Ecuador's wildest landscapes as you cross rolling terrain shaped by ancient volcanic activity.

The trail reaches elevations above 4,200 meters (13,780 feet), providing breathtaking views of Quilindaña Volcano, whose distinctive shape has earned comparisons to the Swiss Matterhorn. Throughout the day you'll hike through expansive páramo dotted with alpine lakes, grazing horses, and sweeping volcanic vistas.

The day concludes at historic Hacienda El Tambo, a property built upon original Inca foundations. After a long but rewarding trek, relax and enjoy the hospitality of this unique mountain retreat.

Distance: 32 km / 20 miles
Hiking time: Approx. 7 hours
Overnight: Hacienda El Tambo
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner

Day 5: Hacienda El Tambo to Santo Domingo Lagoon

With several days of acclimatization behind you, you're ready to tackle another spectacular day in the high Andes.

Departing Hacienda El Tambo, you'll traverse a series of high-altitude valleys and ridges that showcase the raw beauty of Ecuador's volcanic landscape. The route remains above 3,800 meters for much of the day, offering expansive views across glaciated peaks, remote grasslands, and untouched wilderness.

As you approach Santo Domingo Lagoon, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. Surrounded by rugged mountains and pristine páramo, the lagoon provides a peaceful setting to reflect on the incredible journey you've completed so far.

After reaching the lagoon, a vehicle transfer returns you to Hacienda El Porvenir, where a warm meal and comfortable accommodations await.

Day 6: Limpiopungo Lagoon to José Ribas Refuge

The final day delivers one of the most memorable experiences in Ecuador.

After a short transfer to Limpiopungo Lagoon, begin your ascent on the slopes of Cotopaxi Volcano. The trail climbs steadily through volcanic terrain, gradually leaving the grassy páramo behind as the landscape becomes increasingly barren and dramatic.

As you gain elevation, the views stretch across Cotopaxi National Park and the surrounding Avenue of the Volcanoes. Reaching José Ribas Refuge at 4,800 meters (15,748 feet) is a significant accomplishment and a fitting finale to six days of trekking.

After celebrating your achievement with lunch and photos overlooking the volcano, descend back to the trailhead and transfer to Quito, where your lodge-to-lodge adventure comes to an end.
