Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Estes Park to Green Mountain Trailhead

After a gear check and checkout from your hotel in Estes Park (around 6 AM), we head to the Green Mountain Trailhead to begin the six-mile trek to our overnight campsite. Along the way, we'll pass through Tonahutu Meadows, where we'll keep an eye out for herds of elk and moose. We’ll also stop at Granite Falls, an ideal spot for group photos. Once we arrive at base camp, we’ll set up tents and explore two nearby trout streams, Tonahutu Creek and Haynach Creek, both home to wild brook trout or Colorado River cutthroat trout. The day concludes with a freshly cooked dinner and hot chocolate to warm us up.

Day 2: Haynach Lakes Valley

On day two, we start with a freshly cooked breakfast before embarking on a 2.5-mile hike into the stunning Haynach Lakes Valley. This picturesque valley, framed by towering mountains and blanketed with wildflowers, looks like a scene straight out of a movie. The valley is home to two lakes, one of which boasts cutthroat trout over 18 inches. After a day of fishing and a leisurely lunch, we’ll hike back down to base camp for another delicious, freshly prepared dinner, with the option for some additional evening fishing if desired.

Day 3: Fish & Hike Out - Tonahutu Meadows

On our final morning, we enjoy a hot bagel breakfast before packing up camp and beginning the hike out. Along the way, we'll stop at Tonahutu Meadows for some final fishing, targeting rising brook trout, and enjoy a relaxing lunch. Afterward, we continue our hike back to the trailhead and head home, typically arriving back in Estes Park around 5:00 PM.
