Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Cusco

Your adventure begins with your arrival in Cusco, the heart of the former Inca Empire. Upon landing, a FlashpackerConnect representative will greet you outside the airport holding a FlashpackerConnect sign and transfer you to your hotel. Take the rest of the day to acclimatize to the altitude (3,400m/11,150ft) and explore Cusco's cobblestone streets, vibrant plazas, and rich history at your leisure. Consider visiting nearby cafes or taking a gentle walk around the Plaza de Armas to soak in the city’s unique atmosphere.

  • Overnight: Casa Andina Standard Catedral or similar.

Day 2: Sacred Valley Adventure

Set off early at 7:00 am for an immersive exploration of the Sacred Valley, where the stunning Andean landscapes and Incan history come alive.

  • Chinchero: Begin with a visit to the colorful Chinchero market, renowned for its traditional Peruvian textiles and weaving techniques. Here, you’ll witness artisans at work and learn about the ancient methods passed down through generations.
  • Moray: Discover Moray, an impressive archaeological site that served as an Incan agricultural laboratory. Its concentric terraces demonstrate the ingenious farming techniques of the Inca civilization.
  • Maras Salt Mines: Visit the Maras salt mines, a breathtaking network of terraced salt pools that date back to pre-Inca times. Learn about salt harvesting methods, shop for unique salt products, and sample traditional chicha, a fermented corn drink central to Incan culture.

In the evening, board the Expedition train for a scenic 2-hour ride to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of the lush Andean landscapes. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel to rest and prepare for the next day’s highlight.

Day 3: Guided Tour of Machu Picchu

Today, experience the highlight of your journey: the Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu.

  • Morning: Depending on your assigned entrance time, wake early (4:00 am for sunrise tours) or later for a relaxed start. Take a 25-minute bus ride to the Machu Picchu entrance, where your guide will lead you through a 2-hour exploration of this world-renowned archaeological site. Learn about its history, architectural marvels, and cultural significance as you walk among the ancient ruins.
  • Afternoon: After your tour, return to Aguas Calientes and board the Expedition train back to Ollantaytambo. A private van will transfer you to Cusco, where you can relax and reflect on your incredible day.

Day 4: Rainbow Mountain Trek

Embark on an unforgettable trek to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), one of Peru’s most stunning natural wonders.

  • Early Morning: Your adventure begins with a 3:00 am pickup from your hotel. After a scenic 3-hour drive, enjoy a traditional Peruvian breakfast prepared by our chef at the trailhead.
  • The Hike: The 2-hour trek covers approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) to reach Rainbow Mountain’s summit. Along the way, pass through verdant valleys, spot alpacas grazing, and enjoy views of the towering Ausangate Glacier. As you approach the summit, marvel at the colorful mineral layers that create the iconic "painted hills."
  • Summit Experience: At the top (5,035m/16,520ft), take in the 360-degree views of the surrounding Andean landscape. Enjoy snacks and coca tea while soaking in the serene atmosphere.
  • Return Journey: After an hour of relaxation, descend the trail (1.5 hours) back to the trailhead, where a gourmet lunch awaits in a traditional mud house. Return to Cusco by late afternoon (around 3:00-4:00 pm).
  • Trek Details:
    • Distance: 10km (5 miles round trip).
    • Elevation: 4,450m (14,600ft) to 5,035m (16,520ft).
    • Difficulty: Difficult (recommended for those acclimatized to altitude).
  • Overnight: Casa Andina Standard Catedral or similar.

Day 5: Cusco – Lima

Your morning begins with a guided exploration of Cusco, immersing you in the city’s rich history and architectural wonders:

  • Plaza de Armas & Cathedral: Start at Cusco’s central square, where you’ll visit the majestic cathedral, a blend of Spanish colonial and Incan influences. Inside, marvel at its intricate wood carvings and ornate altars.
  • Q’oricancha – Temple of the Sun: Walk along an ancient Inca-built street to the Q’oricancha. This spiritual center of the Inca Empire is an incredible testament to Incan engineering, with its finely cut stones contrasting sharply with the later Spanish additions. Learn about its significance and how it connected the empire’s four quarters.
  • Sacsayhuaman: A short drive brings you to this awe-inspiring Inca site, featuring massive stone monoliths weighing over 200 tons. Enjoy guided insights and free time to explore this ancient fortress.
  • Q’enqo, Puca Pucara, & Tambomachay: Visit these smaller but equally fascinating Inca sites, each with its unique features, from altars and ceremonial spaces to water fountains believed to have been used for rituals.

After completing your tour, transfer to the Cusco airport for your evening flight to Lima. Upon arrival, check in for your next day’s flight to La Paz.

Day 6: Lima – La Paz

Fly to La Paz, Bolivia’s high-altitude capital, situated at over 3,600m (11,800ft). Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel for a day of rest and acclimatization. Take advantage of the morning and afternoon to recharge for the adventures ahead. Explore the hotel amenities or enjoy a relaxed stroll in the city if you're feeling up to it.

  • Overnight: Stannum Hotel (booked from the night before for added convenience).

Day 7: La Paz – Uyuni Salt Flats Adventure

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your early morning flight to Uyuni. Upon landing, your local guide will greet you, marking the start of an unforgettable day exploring the iconic Uyuni Salt Flats:

  • Train Graveyard: Discover a hauntingly beautiful collection of abandoned locomotives, remnants of Bolivia’s industrial era.
  • Colchani: Visit this quaint settlement to see salt miners at work and shop for unique salt-based handicrafts and llama or alpaca textiles.
  • Salt Flats Highlights:
    • Cruise across the dazzling expanse of the salt flats, pausing at Los Ojos de Agua Salada (natural saltwater springs).
    • Visit a hotel made entirely of salt, now a fascinating museum.
  • Lunch at Isla Incahuasi (Fish Island): Enjoy a scenic lunch amid giant cacti and coral-like rock formations. Hike to the island's summit for panoramic views of the salt flats. (Note: During the rainy season, access to Isla Incahuasi may be restricted.)
  • Pia Pia Island & Sunset: Conclude your day with a breathtaking sunset over the salt flats, followed by dinner. Afterward, enjoy an unforgettable stargazing experience with a telescope at a lookout point.
  • Overnight: Basic Hotel in Agencha (private or shared room, depending on availability).

Special Notes:

  • Rainy Season (November to March): During this period, the salt flats transform into a mirror-like surface due to the rains, creating stunning photo opportunities. However, access to Incahuasi Island and some other areas may be limited.
  • Accommodations in Agencha: Due to the limited number of private rooms, shared accommodations may be assigned. Your comfort is our priority, and we’ll do our best to secure a private room if available.

Day 8: Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve Exploration

Begin your adventure at 7:00 am with breakfast before setting off to explore the awe-inspiring Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, a natural wonderland teeming with diverse landscapes and wildlife.

Highlights of the Day

  • Galaxy Caves: Start with a visit to these captivating caves, known for their unique geological formations.
  • Chiguana Desert: Journey through the Chiguana Desert, surrounded by dormant and active volcanoes, including the impressive Ollague Volcano (5,840m), which emits faint plumes visible from a lookout point.
  • Andean Lagoons: Visit three stunning lagoons:
    • Cañapa Lagoon: Witness vibrant pink flamingos feeding in its shallow waters.
    • Hedionda Lagoon: Stop here for lunch amid a scenic backdrop of flamingos and rugged Andean peaks.
    • Chiarcota Lagoon: A birdwatcher’s paradise, home to a variety of birds and unique high-altitude wildlife.
  • Siloli Desert and Rock Tree: Enter the Siloli Desert, the highest and driest desert in the world, to marvel at its surreal landscapes and take iconic photos with the “Rock Tree,” a natural lava formation sculpted by wind erosion.
  • Red Lagoon (Laguna Colorada): Cap the day with a visit to this remarkable crimson-hued lake, a habitat for thousands of flamingos and framed by the towering Andes.

End the day in Huayllajara, staying at a cozy family lodge.

Day 9: Geysers, Hot Springs, and Return to La Paz

Kick off the day at 5:00 am for an unforgettable exploration of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve’s geological wonders and return to Uyuni before your overnight bus ride to La Paz. **We can add 1 more day in Uyuni on the last day sleeping in Jardines de Uyuni and having a flight departing in the morning instead of the bus. The additional for 2 people is US$ 195 per person.

Highlights of the Day

  • Sol de Mañana Geysers: Walk alongside steaming fumaroles and bubbling mud pots at an altitude of 5,000m. The geothermal activity here creates an otherworldly landscape.
  • Hot Springs: Relax in open-air thermal baths surrounded by breathtaking views, with water temperatures reaching a soothing 35°C. Enjoy a hearty pancake breakfast post-dip.
  • Dali Desert: Marvel at a surreal desert landscape reminiscent of Salvador Dali’s paintings, scattered with boulders amid vast stretches of sand.
  • Green Lagoon (Laguna Verde): Visit this mesmerizing turquoise lake at the foot of the Licancabur Volcano (6,000m), just a few kilometers from the Bolivia-Chile border.

Return Journey to Uyuni

Enjoy a scenic drive back to Uyuni, stopping for a picnic lunch along the way. Pass through:

  • Valley of the Rocks: A stunning landscape dotted with rock formations.
  • Alota Settlement & San Cristobal Village: Visit San Cristobal Church to view exquisite colonial paintings and learn about local traditions.

Arrive in Uyuni and make your way to the bus station for your overnight journey to La Paz (departure at 8:30 pm, approximately 10 hours).

Day 10: Departure from La Paz

Arrive in La Paz early in the morning, where a FlashpackerConnect representative will transfer you to the airport for your international flight. Reflect on the incredible memories you’ve made across Peru and Bolivia as your journey comes to an end.
